Myanmar’s UN Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun has urged the international community to provide robust support and listen to the voices of the people of Myanmar.
The global community must unite to ensure the voices of Myanmar people are both heard and respected and to hold the junta accountable for its crimes. A future in which human rights are upheld could be forged in Myanmar only through coordinated international pressure and support, stressed the ambassador during a speech at a UN meeting held on October 23, according to the report of the Office of Permanent Mission of Myanmar to the United Nations on October 25.
“Though Myanmar’s Spring Revolution has advanced significantly due to the resilience of the Myanmar people, tangible support from the global community could expedite progress. So, international assistance is paramount,” a political activist from Monywa told MPA.
The ambassador reiterated to cease providing both arms and support to the Myanmar junta, reflecting the recent terrifying massacre at Butalin Township, Sagaing Region, where junta soldiers mutilated and dismembered the bodies of slain civilians with the heads hung on fences after being severed. He also criticized certain countries that continue to support the junta with arms and dual-use items, enabling the military to proceed with killings of innocent civilians.
Additionally, the ambassador referenced findings from the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar, which classify the military’s actions as crimes against humanity and war crimes, and appealed to the international community to strengthen its focus on protecting all of Myanmar’s people, including the Rohingya, from further suffering inflicted by the junta.
