Residents of Kutkai, a town under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), are being forced to flee their homes at night due to fears of impending airstrikes by the military junta.
On Monday, the Myanmar military junta carried out an airstrike on Man Hsar Village, situated between Namtu and Kutkai. This attack occurred while junta representatives were in Kunming City for talks with the TNLA, following China’s intervention.
A woman from Kutkai reported that rumors went viral on social media that the military might also attack Kutkai town after the bombing of Man Hsar Village, prompting some residents to relocate to safer areas at night to avoid potential airstrikes as of Wednesday.
“At night, people move to places they believe are safer. During the day, daily life continues as usual,” she said.
Meanwhile, intense fighting erupted in Tawng Hkam Village, Nawnghkio Township, in northern Shan State on Sunday and Monday, coinciding with the military-TNLA talks in Kunming. In response, the military junta launched airstrikes in the area.
A male resident of Kutkai remarked, “Whether the airstrike rumors are spread by pro-military lobbyists or others, we must remain vigilant. The fighting hasn’t completely stopped—clashes continue in Nawnghkio, and aircraft frequently circle over nearby towns. Since we don’t know when they might strike, staying alert is our best option.”
Local administrators have also warned residents to exercise caution following reports of potential airstrikes in Nam Hpat Kar Village, Kutkai Township.
A resident of Nam Hpat Kar Village shared his concerns: “Fighting broke out even on the day of the talks. I had hoped the discussions would lead to some resolution, but since they didn’t, we need to be even more cautious about possible airstrikes. A friend in Mogoke told me aircraft were circling there on Tuesday night.”
On Wednesday, the TNLA confirmed that the talks ended without any agreement.
Prior to the discussions, on February 10, the military junta carried out around 20 airstrikes on TNLA-controlled Mogoke town, killing five civilians and injuring 19 others.
