Myanmar’s military junta has launched airstrikes in Sagaing Region’s Monywa and Chaung-U townships, forcing nearly 8,000 civilians to flee their homes in search of safety.
From Thursday to Monday, military airstrikes, including bombings from Y-12 aircraft and paramotors, displaced residents from about 20 villages along the Chaung-U and Monywa township border, according to the Monywa-Amyint Road Strike Leading Committee.
A committee member told MPA, “People are still fleeing airstrikes and artillery shelling as of Monday. On Thursday night, they attacked with a Y-12 aircraft. Then, around 4:30 a.m., they struck again with another Y-12. Later, paramotors were used to drop bombs.”
As a result, residents from multiple villages in Chaung-U Township—including East Kyi Kone, Ma Thea Kyoe, Inn Ma, Ta Pei Inn, Khin Mon, Ywar Taw Lay, Htu Ni, Taung Phi Thar, Ma Kyo, Shan Htu, and Taung Ni—as well as villages in Monywa Township, such as West Kyi Kone, Nyaung Hpyu Pin, Thit Seint, Lel Taw, Chan Thar Kyun, Bu Ba, Chaung Kauk, and Ma Yoe Kone, have been displaced.
“The number of displaced people is well over 8,000, including those who fled earlier and those who have just recently left. Right now, the main concerns are food and water. Some are staying with relatives, but most are taking shelter in monasteries,” the committee member added.
According to the Monywa-Amyint Road Strike Leading Committee, the junta launched airstrikes on Thursday and Friday targeting Nyaung Hpyu Pin, Thit Seint, and Ma Yoe Kone villages in Monywa Township, as well as an IDP camp in Ku Lar Gyi Village, Chaung-U Township. These attacks killed 13 civilians and left many others injured.
