In Karenni State, over 600 homes of internally displaced persons in three townships have been damaged due to severe flooding, prompting an urgent requirement for emergency assistance, according to Karenni National Women Organization (KNWO).
In Karenni State, flooding and landslides have occurred in Loikaw, eastern Demoso, and Shadaw townships, affecting IDP camps, according to a representative of the Karenni National Women Organization (KNWO).
“KNWO is currently assisting with a few reachable camps in eastern Demoso, Loikaw, and Shadaw. However, we do not yet have complete information on the affected households. Some areas, like western Demoso, parts of Pruso, and other areas of Loikaw, have also been affected. KNWO is collaborating with CSOs and donors to coordinate efforts with the responsible IDP committees to provide support,” the representative told MPA.
Among the seven IDP camps in Demoso Township, eight houses in camp-2, 11 houses in camp-3, 40 houses in camp-4, 65 houses in camp-5, 90 houses in camp-6, and 141 houses in camp-7 were destroyed by the flooding. In Shadaw Township, 267 houses of IDPs were also damaged.
The destruction of these homes was documented by KNWO, which assisted on the ground. However, many other Karenni residents remain affected by the ongoing flooding.
Reportedly, IDPs whose homes were destroyed by the floods have been temporarily housed in vacant homes in an area of Karenni State.
The displaced people are suffering from skin diseases, influenza, and malaria due to the flood, and urgently need clothing, shelter, and essential kitchen items, according to KNWO.
