A greengrocer in Kyauktada Township said that the price of tomatoes has risen and they are selling for 100 kyats each.
The price of the tomatoes has been gradually rising since last August 22, and today, September 2, it has become almost one hundred kyats, said a greengrocer in Kyauktada Township.
“Tomatoes are not something that can be stored away. The price goes up, when the wholesalers keep going up. If there are no buyers because the price is high, then when it rots, we lose. If the buyer is sick, they won’t buy,” explained a greengrocer in Kyauktada Township.
The MPA has investigated that 10 ticals (1 tical = 16.3293 g) of Than Yaung tomatoes are being sold for between 250 and 300 kyats in Yangon Region, Kyee Myin Daing Night Market, Pazundaung Market and Seikkanthar Street Market, while most of the shops are selling at least 20 ticals for between 500 and 600 kyats.
When the MPA asked a housewife about the rising price of tomatoes, she said that she was worried that the price of tomatoes would rise less than that of onions and would not fall like the price of onions.
A housewife commented that the increase in the price of tomatoes is one of the reasons for the high prices, as the rainy tomatoes are about to run out, and fuel and gate fees paid to the terrorist SAC make transportation costs high.
“Now, because the price has not gone up, there is nothing. Now the price of onions, oil, and tomatoes has become more expensive than before. Before, it cost 500 to buy 8 or 9 each. Now, for 500, just think about how to cook five tomatoes,” explained a housewife from Kyauktada Township.
At present, the wholesale price of tomatoes in Hlaing Township’s Thiri Mingalar New Market is between 2,100 and 2,300 kyats per viss (1viss = 1.63293 kg), and the retail price of green produce sellers in various townships is between 2,500 and 2,600 kyats per viss, the MPA has investigated.
