The Myanmar military launched an artillery strike on Htantabin Township in Bago Region early Thursday, killing a 70-year-old woman and seriously injuring three others, including a child.
According to the Taungoo District Resistance Battalion 2 (P2-3502), junta troops stationed at Nyaung Chay Htauk military camp and Infantry Battalion 73 in Za Yat Gyi Town fired more than 10 heavy artillery shells around 1 a.m. Two shells exploded in Thaung Pu Chaung Village, striking homes and injuring civilians.
“The area is not a combat zone, but the junta indiscriminately shelled villages along the Sittaung River, accusing them of supporting resistance forces,” a resistance official told MPA.
The injured include an eight-year-old child, a man in his 50s, and a woman in her 50s—all in serious condition. Another man, in his 40s, sustained non-life-threatening facial injuries.
“Not the entire village has fled, but many residents are now hiding,” the official added. Two houses were destroyed in the shelling.
Additional shells landed near the village and in the Sittaung River. Fearing further attacks, residents from Thaung Pu Chaung, Hlay Swea Myaung, Hnaw Khin, and Htan Kone villages have taken shelter in nearby fields.
