Despite declaring a ceasefire, Myanmar’s military junta carried out an airstrike on the Htoo Chaung gate camp between Bawlakhe and Hpasawng townships in Karenni State, killing one resistance fighter, according to the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) Central News and Information Department.
The airstrike occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, shortly after the junta announced a temporary ceasefire, said a KNDF spokesperson.
“Yes, there was an airstrike yesterday. One resistance soldier was killed while on duty,” the official told MPA.
A military source based in Bawlakhe Township confirmed the bombing and reported structural damage in the area.
“I’m not sure if it was a Y12 aircraft or a jet. The blast was powerful and hit near the gate station. Details on the number of bombs and attacks will be released by relevant authorities,” the source said.
The junta declared a ceasefire from April 2 to 22, citing the need to facilitate earthquake relief and recovery efforts. However, attacks have continued in multiple areas.
On Thursday morning, the military dropped 31 bombs on Bhamo and Indaw townships in Kachin State, beginning at 6:57 a.m. In addition, troops from the No. 58 Light Infantry Battalion, based in Waingmaw Township, reportedly shelled nearby areas and launched ground offensives.
