Naw Kaw Kay who Gave Birth Twice amidst Wars
By Kyaw Kyaw Min / MPA
There were two huge bangs of large weapon explosions at a Myanmar-Thailand border at about 11 o’clock of December 21, near Thaung Yin River in Karen State.
Few young people at Unity IDP Camp in Hpalulay village were moved at hearing the explosion sound.
After a few moments of no following sounds, one murmured, ‘Maybe just scare shots!’ Some of the rest also took a sigh. However, there was one group at the camp who was unable to take a sigh.
An IDP woman with well-matured pregnancy was giving birth. Her husband was not by her side, but at the frontline of the fighting place. The only 21-year-old young woman, weary from the long journey escaping wars, was giving birth to a child with great difficulty.
“Even if the belly aches, it has to be managed with difficulty. We’ll run together after she gives birth”, said a lady (midwife) who helped with the birth-giving.
It was hard as it was overdue, the baby was grown and the birthing time was long. The baby’s mother Naw Kaw Kay is also weary as she had squeezed with all the energy she had.
As it hurt so badly, I couldn’t think about anything else, Naw Kaw Kay said. She couldn’t remember the clash noises nor the large weapon sounds. She also said her husband had told her that he wouldn’t be able to look after her yet.
At 11am, 12 minutes of the 21st, even after the bluish calm after giving birth, the helpers (midwives) couldn’t let out a deep sigh yet.
“The baby wasn’t crying, it was all blue. Wrapped with clothes and pressed the chest hard. After about 2 hours, it made ‘eh eh’ sound, only after that could everyone be happy. Initially, we thought it was stillborn. The baby was given oxygen for about 15 minutes. Only after about half an hour did the baby cry and only then could everyone laugh”, said one lady (midwife) who helped with the birthing process.
The baby’s mother Naw Kaw Kay lived in Hpalulay village and had to move to the IDP camp due to a fight on December 19. During a clash around Hpalugyi village, the terrorist military raided and fired shots on both IDP camps and homes and the people had to flee their homes.
Because of this very clash, her husband went to the frontline of the fight. Since the terrorist military created clashes since December 15 beginning from Lay Kay Kaw Myothit firing both large and small weapons on homes, thousands of people from Hpalugyi, Hteemaewakhee, Mae Htaw Thale, Mae Let Pan, Pahikalaw, Yathaegu including her village Hpalulay fled their homes and escaped.
The emergency IDP camps are full with war victims and they are in need of food supplies, medicines and other utensils. Naw Kaw Kay is also without any diapers nor any baby items. However, those are not as difficult for her as the birthing was.
The sound of two huge rounded substances falling was heard. As the belly ached so badly at that time, I didn’t even have time to think about it. But I said to send words for my husband, Naw Kaw Kay said.
It wasn’t her first time giving birth while fleeing a war though. During giving birth to her first boy child a year and half ago, she had experienced clashes in the region of Myaing Gyi Ngu. She also lost her mother in that clash.
At the time of giving birth to her second child also, there are wars again in Karen State where she lives. Due to clashes near Hpalugyi village, she had to run crossing over Thaung Yin river with well-matured pregnancy and the next day, she had to return to where her husband was.
No matter how much difficulty there was, after successfully giving birth to a baby boy, she was able to wear smiles on her face.
When they said it was a boy, all the pain was gone and I was so happy, she said with a smiling face.
